What Fittings Do You Use to Connect Funny Pipe to Polyline?

Underground sprinkler systems consist of a sprinkler head, an intermediate pipe that feeds water to the sprinkler head from the lateral water supply line, and the lateral water supply line that distributes water to the system from the main plumbing line. Funny Pipe is the trademarked name of a flexible polyethylene pipe developed by Toro for use as the intermediate pipe to connect individual sprinkler heads to the lateral water supply line. Funny Pipe is known generically in the trade as "swing pipe." Polyline, also known as poly pipe, is a flexible polyethylene tubing used instead of rigid PVC pipe for the lateral water supply line in many underground sprinkler systems.
  1. Compatibility

    • Funny Pipe and polyline must connect at many points in an underground sprinkler system which uses both. Unfortunately, Funny Pipe and polyline are different sizes. Although polyline comes in standard sizes of a 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch inside diameter, Toro manufactures Funny Pipe only in a proprietary size best described as approximately 3/8-inch.

    Adapter Options

    • Fittings to adapt 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch polyline to Funny Pipe are available for most configurations. Funny Pipe doesn't use glue or clamps to secure connections. Adapters are press-fitted into the flexible pipe and tightly held in place by ribs or barbs on the adapter. The ribs are either perfectly circular or a spiral, screw-type. Screw-type adapters can be simply screwed into the flexible pipe, while the ribbed adapters must be press-fitted, sometimes requiring substantial force. If a change must be made or the system dismantled, screw-type adapters are also significantly easier to remove. Polyline may be secured to adapters with hose clamps or just press-fit over the ribbed adapter depending upon the water pressure in the system.

    Adapter Types

    • A straight type adapter converts a single 3/4-inch or 1/2-inch polyline into a Funny Pipe. Straight adapters attach a single sprinkler head directly inline with the termination of the lateral supply line. An elbow type adapts a 3/4-inch or 1/2-inch polyline into a Funny Pipe with a 90-degree elbow. Elbow adapters attach a single sprinkler head that's offset to either side of the termination of the lateral supply line. A tee-fitting splices a Funny Pipe at a 90-degree angle into a straight length of 3/4-inch or 1/2-inch polyline. Tee fittings are the most common adapters used to insert a series of sprinkler heads into a single, long span of polyline.

    Assembly

    • Heat is an ally in assembling Funny Pipe and polyline to adapters. Particularly in cold weather, polyethylene becomes rigid and difficult, if not impossible, to press-fit over the ribs of the adapters. Leaving Funny Pipe and polyline outside in the sun on a bright day may soften it. A source of hot water to soak the ends of the pipe before installation on the adapter is also very helpful. You can also use a heat gun, but take care not to melt or overheat the pipe and weaken it.
