What Are the Benefits of Electric Weed Wackers?

Weed Wackers, or trimmers, are a convenient tool that allows you to trim grass and weeds from around areas you cannot reach with a mower. These handheld devices come in a variety of designs, each with their unique benefits and cutting performance. Choosing between electric and gas-powered trimmers depends on the location and size of area you will be trimming.
  1. Cost

    • The cost of an electric trimmer is usually low because of its design, which includes a small electric motor and plastic housing. They are considerably lower in cost than gas models, but it will depend on which you choose. There are different designs including fixed position, adjustable, single speed and multi-speed cutting units.

    Use

    • An electric trimmer is lightweight and easy to use by simply depressing a trigger. They do not require pulling a starter cord over and over or warming up before use. They also have the benefit of not posing a fire risk from the hot engine touching dry grass. Electric trimmers are quieter than gas models with the only noise being the strings rotating.

    Maintenance

    • Electric weed trimmers require little maintenance compared to combustion engine models. The only maintenance you need to perform is an occasional oiling of the head and refilling the line spool. Combustion engine models require filling with gas, changing spark plugs, cleaning the carburetor and draining the fuel system during the winter. Electric trimmers are not susceptible to cold weather or long periods without use due to the use of the electric motor.

    Environment

    • There is little environmental impact of using an electric weed trimmer due to it using an electric motor. The motor produces no emissions and there is no risk of fuel leakage onto the ground. It is considerably better for the environment than gas combustion models, which create polluting exhaust fumes, especially two-stroke models using a gas and oil mixture.

    Warning

    • You should not operate an electric weed trimmer in the rain or extremely wet conditions due to the risk of electrical shock. Be aware of the electrical cord position at all time to ensure it does not contact any standing water. Proper clothing including long pants and leather, closed-toe shoes will prevent injury from accidental contact from the string. Operators need to wear protective eye wear with any trimmer to protect their eyes from flying debris.
