Mowing Height of the Tuff Turf Blend

Every grass type has a best height for mowing. Tuff Turf is a blend of grass seeds designed to cover bare patches of ground with tread-resistant, heat-tolerant turf all season long. While seed mixtures do help homeowners meet a variety of landscaping needs, the combination of grasses makes determining the proper mowing height a bit of a challenge. For the best results, use the average of the best mowing heights for each type grass.
  1. Mowing Height

    • Most lawn problems result from cutting the grass too short. Mowing at the wrong height weakens the blades, creating a thin, unsightly lawn that is easily invaded by weeds. If cut to the appropriate height, grass grows quickly, choking out weeds in the process. Most mowers have an easy-to-change blade height mechanism. Adjust it as needed to ensure that you do not cut the grass too short.

    Tuff Turf

    • Bags of Tuff Turf seed contain several types of grass. The mixture uses a balanced blend of bunching and creeping grasses to create a thick carpet of turf. The blend uses several types of grass, as well as several cultivators, to produce fine-textured, deep green blades that make a beautiful lawn in tough growing situations. While each type of grass in the mixture has its own best height, the blend itself flourishes when kept between 2 and 4 inches tall.

    Shady Areas

    • Tuff Turf grass is shade-tolerant and is, therefore, a popular choice for seeding poorly lit areas where other grasses refuse to grow. To encourage a dense, lush layer of grass, cut the grass in shady spots ½ to 1 inch higher than normal; longer blades make better use of the light that is available, encouraging root development and promoting future blade production.

    Summer Weather

    • While Tuff Turf grass is drought resistant and heat tolerant, to help the lawn stay green during during periods of extremely hot or dry weather, set the mower blade ½ inch higher than usual and do not cut the grass until it is at least 4 to 6 inches in height. The additional foliage helps the roots recover from stressful environmental conditions.
