How to Add Nitrogen to Grass

Nitrogen is a chemical needed by many forms of grass to remain hale and healthy. It is also a corrosive chemical that can physically burn your lawn if you add too much at once, so care must be taken when adding it to the soil. Nitrogen is added to your lawn through the judicious application of fertilizer mixtures, though the exact amount of fertilizer needed will depend on the type you choose. Nitrogen should be applied to a lawn at a rate of 1lb per 1,000 square feet.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a fertilizer. The best fertilizers to use have "controlled-release" nitrogen to ensure the nitrogen is added at a steady rate instead of all at once.

    • 2

Examine the formula on the front of the fertilizer bag. It will read something like "6-2-0", which describes the percentage of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium in the mixture. Divide 100 by the first number -- 100 divided by six, to use the example number -- to determine how many bags of fertilizer you will need to apply to 1,000 square feet of lawn in order to get the proper amount of nitrogen.

    • 3

Pour the fertilizer mixture into the spreader.

    • 4

Walk the spreader back and forth over your lawn to spread the fertilizer in an even manner.

    • 5

Continue spreading the fertilizer mixture until you have used up all the bags.
