How to Add Sand on Top of a Lawn

After awhile, a lawn begins to settle. Kids ride their bikes on the lawn. The sod isn't installed correctly. All of these lead to uneven or lumpy lawns. While it isn't difficult to level a lawn, it is time-consuming. Sand is a good material to fill the low areas of the lawn, but garden expert and author Walter Reeves suggests mixing the sand with planting soil to avoid creating drainage problems. Add sand -- or a mixture of sand and soil -- to the top of the lawn while it is vigorously growing.

Instructions

    • 1

Combine equal parts dry coarse builder's sand and dry planting soil in a wheelbarrow. Use a garden fork to thoroughly combine the two mediums.

    • 2

Throw handfuls of the mixture lightly onto low areas of the lawn. Walter Reeves suggests that you fill the low spots with only 1/2 inch of the material at this time.

    • 3

Use a broom to wipe the soil off the grass and to keep it confined to the area that needs leveling.

    • 4

Fertilize the lawn, as you normally do, after applying the sand mixture. Water to a depth of 6 inches.

    • 5

Reapply an additional 1/2 inch of the sand/soil mixture, if required, in one month.
