Unscrew any hoses from the outdoor faucet where you want to install the sprinkler system. Make sure the area immediately under the faucet is clear of debris, lawn furniture and other materials.
Screw in a backflow prevention adapter onto the faucet.
Screw a 25 pounds per square inch, or psi, regulator onto the open end of the backflow prevention adapter.
Screw a 1/2-inch poly hose adapter onto the open end of the regulator. The adapter contains a compression fitting that will allow a plastic supply pipe to fit into the assembly that you've attached to the faucet.
Loosen the open end of the poly hose adapter by turning it counterclockwise. Insert one end of the poly pipe into the opening, and then tighten the end of the adapter by turning it clockwise. This will lock the pipe in place. A poly pipe is a thin-walled plastic irrigation pipe that is flexible, durable and rust resistant.
Run the poly pipe along the perimeter of the garden, weaving the pipe around the base of individual plants that are to be watered. Place the pipe at least 5 inches from the base of each plant. For gardens, the pipe may be run in between rows of plants.
Place the hole punch around the pipe at each location where there is a plant base. Punch a hole by pressing down on the handle. The small holes will allow water to drip out at a rate of about 0.25 gallons per minute, which will water the base of the plants adequately in about 4 to 5 minutes.
Turn on the faucet to operate the drip sprinklers. Turn the faucet off to stop the flow of water.
