White Fungus on Grass

You protect your lawn from hazards like car tires and the neighbor's dog. If you live in a climate with high humidity, you might also need to protect it from white fungus.
  1. Powdery Mildew

    • Powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis) is a fungal growth that attacks many kinds of plants, including grass. It feeds off the nutrients found inside grass and can spread rapidly. As it covers blades of grass, your lawn will look as though it has been dusted with flour.

    Solutions

    • Powdery mildew is rarely managed through the use of fungicide. Instead, reducing shade and increasing air circulation in the affected area can help with the infection. Trimming back shrubs helps, as does increasing grass height and avoiding frequent watering, which keeps your lawn moist.

    Considerations

    • If you have repeated issues with white fungus on your grass, you might need to plant a mildew-resistant variety of grass or a different kind of ground cover in the area. Severe infestations of powdery mildew can eventually kill your grass.
