How to Mow Floratam Grass

Floratam is the St. Augustine grass variety of choice on the U.S. Gulf Coast. It is a product of a joint breeding effort by the University of Florida and Texas A&M University, thus giving it its name. Floratam doesn't perform as well in shade as other varieties and needs at least six hours of strong daily sunlight to thrive. The grass requires frequent watering and regular fertilization, growing quickly during warm weather. Floratam needs frequent mowing.

Instructions

    • 1

Mow Floratam to 2 1/2 to 4 inches, as recommended by the University of Florida. Mow often to avoid removing more than one-third of the leaf blade. Mow overgrown grass as high as possible, then mow a second or even third time to gradually bring it down to the desired height.

    • 2

Mow newly sodded Floratam lawns no sooner than one month after laying. Sod should give strong resistance to lifting from the ground before the grass is mowed.

    • 3

Begin mowing Floratam in the spring after new growth starts. Don't mow dormant grass, known as scalping, which opens up the grass canopy to insects and disease.

    • 4

Mow Floratam every five to seven days during the summer months. Mow less often during periods of drought.

    • 5

Mow Floratam only as needed during the fall months. Stop mowing when the lawn stops growing, usually in December.
