How to Remove a Mower Clutch

If you need to perform maintenance on your lawn mower, part of the disassembly process is removing the clutch. This will open up your mower and allow you to replace a faulty clutch, if needed. This process requires partial disassembly of the mower, but even if you aren’t used to working with machinery, you’ll find that you can get the clutch off in a matter of minutes.

      Power off your lawn mower.

      Use a nut driver or electric screwdriver to remove all screws from the metal screen on the top of the mower.

      Locate the spark plug. This is a small cylindrical piece of metal on the engine next to the clutch.

      Insert starter rope in the spark plug port.

      Place your large channel lock over the clutch and turn it counterclockwise to loosen and remove it.
