How to Get Rid of Rust on a Metal Sprinkler Pipe

Metal sprinkler pipes are most often composed of galvanized steel. This material is much more resistant to rust than black steel pipes, which is why it's used in sprinkler systems that are exposed to the elements. However, even galvanized steel will rust over time. Removing that rust is fairly straightforward, requiring more muscle work than materials. However, it's important to remove rust as it appears rather than wait for corrosion to take over the pipe.

Things You'll Need

  • Fine steel wool
  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • Rag
  • Stainless steel pipe brush

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the sprinkler line for signs of rust. Take note of areas that are discolored with red or orange tones, as this is a sign of rust.

    • 2

Rub the area of the rust with a pad of fine steel wool in a smooth but firm back-and-forth motion. The steel wool will remove the bulk of the rust after several swipes.

    • 3

Rub the area that you just cleaned with a fine-grit sandpaper. The sandpaper will polish the pipe and remove any surface pitting that allows rust to form. Vigorously scrub the pipe until it is smooth to the touch and there are no visible signs of rust.

    • 4

Wipe the pipe with a clean rag and inspect the pipe again for signs of lingering rust. Remove any remaining rust by repeating the cleaning process.

Remove rust that may be present in small crevices of the pipe or plumbing fittings, or on the inside of a pipe with a stainless steel pipe brush. Use the bristles of the brush to firmly rub away signs of rust. If possible, tear off a small section of sandpaper and rub the inside of the pipe lip to remove fine particles of rust.
