Create a design for your hedges. They may be tall to ensure privacy, or can be shaped into creative designs for landscape appeal. Make a detailed plan for trimming your hedges to prevent mistakes in your work.
Check your motorized trimmer for leaks and make sure the blades are sharp. Dull blades can result in the machine malfunctioning, which can be dangerous. They can also cause the trimmed branches and leaves to become bruised, which can hinder growth.
Put on your goggles and gloves and place your ear plugs in your ears. Trimming hedges results in a great amount of flying debris, which can easily damage your eyes. Gloves will prevent painful blisters.
Lop off thick branches with the hedge clippers. By removing these pieces first, you will decrease the number of times you will have to switch tools.
Start the motorized trimmer and slowly move it over the branches that are to be trimmed. It is better to make more than one cut than to cut once and remove too much. Begin with the sides of the hedge, then move to the top and bottom.
Pick up the clippings and place them with the rest of your yard waste.
