Some homeowners are allowed the option of draining water from their basement into the local sewage system. However, some sewage systems can't sustain such a technique, depending on the amount of water your system discharges. Some communities do not allow for homeowners to dispose of drainage in such a manner as the sewage system. If your home is in the country or in a smaller community, you can request permission to drain your discharge in this manner.
To drain water from your basement in this manner, you simply need to install a drainage pipe through the basement wall of your home to the outside and extend the drainage pipe to your driveway. This discharge method makes the most sense for those who live in an area where the temperatures are warm a majority of the time. However, draining water to your driveway when the temperatures are cooler could cause a frozen surface and a safety hazard.
To drain water to a dry well, homeowners simply need to install a drainage pipe through their basement wall and extend the pipe to a dry well. Depending on the amount of water you need to drain from your home in a short amount of time, this may or may not be a feasible option. If your basement collects a significant amount of water and your well is not very deep, the well may hold the amount of water you need to pump out.
If you have a desire to raise moisture-loving plants, you can install a rain garden in your backyard and direct sump pump drainage to it. Rain gardens consist of small depressed areas where plants that require a large amount of water can live.
