How to Attach a Sprinkler Head to a Pipe

Once you have laid down your sprinkler pipe and fittings, it's time to install the sprinkler heads themselves. Sprinkler heads come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to fit your exact watering needs. But no matter what brand or size sprinkler you choose, the process for installing the heads remains the same. Following a few steps will ensure that your sprinklers stay in place and work properly for many watering seasons to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a sprinkler riser into the connection port on the supply pipe. The port is a round hole that points straight up.

    • 2

Turn the riser pipe by hand clockwise until it's tight. Grab the end of the pipe with a pair of adjustable pliers and turn another half turn to finish tightening the connection.

    • 3

Place a sprinkler head on top of the riser pipe. Align the hole on the bottom of the sprinkler head with the male threads on the end of the riser.

    • 4

Turn the sprinkler head clockwise by hand until it's very tight but be careful not to strip the threads on the riser by turning it more once the sprinkler head is secure.

    • 5

Cover the riser and the sides of the sprinkler head with dirt until they're level with the surface. Repeat the process for each sprinkler head on the system.
