How to Repair a Sprinkler System Pressure Valve Cap

The vacuum pressure valve on your sprinkler system is an important piece of safety equipment that prevents water that enters the sprinkler lines from flowing backward into the main water line. This is important because water that enters an irrigation system is not drinkable anymore. While you can't repair the cap on top of the pressure valve once it has cracked or broken into pieces, you can easily replace it with a new one that's available from the manufacturer or at most home improvement stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • New cap for your specific model of pressure vacuum valve

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the pressure valve on your irrigation system. The valve is always installed above ground and usually is located near the side of the house.

    • 2

Place an adjustable wrench over the nut on the very top of the valve and turn the nut counterclockwise until it releases from the threaded post.

    • 3

Pull the damaged cap off of the valve and discard.

    • 4

Place the new cap on top of the valve with the curved edges facing downward. Align the threaded post with the hole in the center of the cap and slide the cap down until it sits on top of the valve.

    • 5

Place the nut that you removed earlier on top of the threaded post and tighten with an adjustable wrench.
