How to Use Brick as a Mowing Edge Strip

Using a brick or any kind of paver as a mowing edge strip has many advantages, and such an edge strip is fairly simple to install. Edging around lawn is essential to keep grass in its designated area because grass tends to leach into any place it can. Without a border, grass can take over a garden and/or surrounding landscaped areas. Using brick as edging allows you to line up a lawnmower's wheels and run right on top of the brick border so you can mow the edges of the lawn easily and achieve a clean appearance without using a grass trimmer.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the location where you want to place the brick edge strip, or border.

    • 2

Measure the width of the bricks. Starting at the place you want the brick border, measure into the lawn to the point 2 inches past the width of the bricks. Mark that location. Tie a string around one nail, and run it along the border to create a straight line.

    • 3

Remove grass and soil from the place where you will place the brick border, excavating it to the same depth as the thickness of the bricks. Make that ground as level as possible.

    • 4

Lay the bricks in the excavated area. Position them close together to create a tight fit. As you lay them in place, use a level and a rubber mallet to create a level surface. If you need to cut bricks to size, use a saw with a diamond blade.

    • 5

Fill in the gaps between the lawn and the brick border with topsoil. Grass will fill in that area, but sprinkle grass seed in the gap area if want grass there quicker.
