How to Landscape a Big Yard With an Oak Tree

A large yard with a sizable tree provides an inviting and family-friendly place for play. If you’re lucky enough to possess a large plot of land, make it look its best with careful attention to landscaping. Because a large yard and healthy tree are already naturally attractive, you will likely have to do little to make this yard a stunning one.

Instructions

    • 1

Edge around the tree and the perimeter of the lawn. Use an electric or manual edger to complete this task, creating a large ring around the perimeter of the tree, as the grass in this area is prone to dying because it doesn’t get the necessary sunlight. Also, go along the property line with the edger, making a crisp end to your lawn.

    • 2

Add flower beds. Use the edger to create beds that flank your home and extend several feet. If you wish, you can make the edges of these beds straight lines; however, they generally look more natural and appealing when they are wavy and serpentine. Fill these beds with bushes and flowers as well as mulch in a hue to suit your taste.

    • 3

Lay mulch around the base of the tree. Use the same color mulch you feature in your flower beds. If you wish, you can also add flowers to this ring; however, you should take care to select flowers that thrive in the shade as the tree’s leaf-covered branches will likely block out most of the sun.

Re-sod over any exposed tree roots. If the roots have surfaced leaving your lawn uneven, add a fresh layer of sod to this section to correct this issue and beautify your lawn.

    • 5

Fertilize the lawn. Hire a professional company to complete this task, or use a fertilizer spreader and tackle the process yourself, fertilizing several times a year according to the package instructions to ensure your lawn is green and lush.
