The Average Cost to Sod a .25-Acre Lot

A .25-acre lawn is 10,890 square feet. The cost of the sod for a quarter-acre will depend on the manufacturer, the supplies needed and equipment required. Sod itself is relatively inexpensive, but it is the other costs associated with sod installation that usually account for most of its cost.
  1. Cost of Sod

    • The cost of sod will vary, depending on the distributor and the type of sod. Bermuda and centipedegrass are less expensive than St. Augustine and zoysiagrass. The average cost is between 11 to 26 cents per square foot as of 2010, according to the University of Georgia. This cost does not include delivery if needed. For a lawn that is 10,890 square feet, it would cost between approximately $1,198 and $2,831.

    Installing the Sod

    • The cost of installing sod can raise the cost of sod per square foot. Generally, the most expensive part of sodding a lawn is the installation, which can account for as much as 50 percent of the cost. The cost of sod with installation would range from $2,396 to $5,662.

    Topsoil

    • If you need a 1-inch layer of screened topsoil to freshen the dirt in your yard, you would need approximately 33.64 cubic yards. The cost will vary between distributors, but it would cost about $1,360 for topsoil. Screened topsoil is better to use than unscreened topsoil. Screened soil is free of weeds, rocks and debris. This soil dirt has no big dirt clumps and is easier to rake and level.

    Equipment

    • After the sod is installed, it needs to be flattened so the air pockets between the sod and the ground are removed. Flattening is done with a drum roller, which you can rent from a local equipment store. The prices will vary, but generally, you can rent the roller for a certain number of hours or for a full day. This is only necessary if you install the sod yourself.
