How to Build Your Own Backyard Beach

Clear a section of your backyard in which you'll create your beach. Remove all decorations from the area, including stones and objects, such as a hammock or lawn chairs. Look over the area once it's cleared and determine if the section will meet all your needs. For example, is there a spot for a fire pit? How about Tiki torches, driftwood or a lounge chair? If you do plan to have a fire pit, look overhead. Are there any trees or lines that will catch fire? If so, consider a different spot.

Fill the area with gravel. Gravel reduces the amount of sand you require, and allows you to elevate the beach and create dunes. Spread the gravel over the ground using a shovel until you have a landscape pattern you like. You can make the beach mostly flat with a couple of elevated dunes for lounging or you can make a large circular dune for sitting on with a recessed middle for a fire pit.

Dig the hole for your fire pit if desired. Fill the bottom with gravel to help drain water when it rains, then place wood inside. You can put a grill grate over the pit for grilling food.

Cover the gravel with sand. The first layer of sand will partially fall through the cracks in the gravel and disappear. Continue covering the gravel until the sand is as thick as you'd like. If you have small children, considering filling one part with extra sand for the construction of sand castles.

Decorate the area with ocean-related items, such as seashells and driftwood. Place torches around the area for nighttime light. If you have a fence nearby, consider mounting themed items to the fence, such as a small anchor or net. Be creative, and choose items that personally remind you of the beach.
