How to Cut Sod for Transplant

Cutting grass from one part of the yard to transplant in another is a big job. Having the proper tools makes it easier and having an assistant makes it a snap. Use a power sod cutter, available for rent at large home and garden department stores, to get the job done quickly. When you rent the sod cutter, ask for instructions on how to use it. Better yet, ask for a demonstration. Knowing the basics of how to operate the machine is essential for both getting the sod cut and for your safety.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the gear shift in the neutral position. Start the sod cutter.

    • 2

Adjust the depth using the lever on the machine. Run the machine for 2 to 3 feet and then test the depth by lifting the sod. It should come up easily and hold together well with a layer of soil on the bottom.

    • 3

Begin slowly pushing the sod cutter as you walk behind.

    • 4

Use a sod knife to cut the strips into a more manageable size. Roll up each piece and place it in the wheelbarrow to make it easier to transport to the new site.
