How to Landscape a Transformer Box

Unsightly utility equipment can ruin the aesthetics of your landscape. With a little planning, you can design your landscape to hide unsightly transformer boxes from view while maintaining a safe work environment for personnel who must access the equipment. You can use a variety of materials, including trees, shrubs and mulches, to design an attractive display. Plants with little spread and a dense appearance will screen a transformer box from public view.

Instructions

    • 1

Call local utility companies and ask them to mark the underground lines on your property near the transformer box.

    • 2

Arrange the shrubs in their pots around the transformer in an arch. The arch provides a visual screen while allowing access to the equipment. Plants should be 2 to 3 feet from any underground utility line or the transformer box. View the arrangement from the property line or roadway to ensure that it is visually pleasing. When the plants are full grown, they should not interfere with the maintenance of the transformer equipment.

    • 3

Install the shrubs according to the grower’s instructions and then water. Choose low shrubs and trees that do not have hanging branches, such as dogwood, barberry, juniper and lilac among others.

Place mulch around the shrubs and the transformer box. You can use organic mulch such as bark or leaves or an inorganic mulch such as pea gravel or river rock. Keep the mulch size under 2 inches in diameter.
