How to Isolate a Sprinkler System

Having a healthy lawn requires a lot of attention to detail, from fertilizer to pest suppression to weed control. One of the most crucial aspects of getting the lawn just the way you want it is to ensure that it has the water it needs in the right amounts at the right times. A reliable sprinkler system with a timer makes providing water to your lawn simple. However, there are times when your sprinkler lines might develop a leak. Your first indication of such a leak might be a skyrocketing water bill. To fix the leak, you first have to isolate where it is.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water to your house and check your meter to see if it is still spinning. If it is still spinning, your leak is not in your house.

    • 2

Turn off your sprinkler system on a dry day. After a few hours, search your yard to see if you can spot a damp area where the sprinkler system is leaking into the ground. It might be a pipe underground, but it is most likely a valve at the surface.

    • 3

Turn on your sprinkler system if you cannot find the leak by checking the surface. Override the sprinkler timer and activate the system.

    • 4

Examine the water coming out of the sprinkler heads. The line that is leaking should be supplying less water pressure to one or more heads, resulting in lower pressure.
