List & Information of Brands of Fertilizers

Fertilizer, soil amendment and compost are interchangeable descriptions of substances put into the soil to enhance plant growth. The International Fertilizer Association describes fertilizer as "Any natural or manufactured material that contains at least 5 percent of one or more of the three primary nutrients: nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) or potassium (K)." Compost fertilizers are derived from all natural sources and provide 17 nutrients essential for healthy plant growth. Fertilizer label claims are regulated by state fertilizer control officials. There is no USDA National Organic Program regulation for fertilizer.
  1. Scott's

    • To use Scott's All Purpose Flower & Vegetable Continuous Release Plant Foo, sprinkle it on the soil surface and rake it into the top 1 to 3 inches. Apply every 2 months during the growing season to provide a continual supply of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Plants require continuous feeding with synthetic fertilizers because they do not feed soil microorganisms that create nutrients for plants. The label warning on Scott's All-Purpose fertilizer cautions that eyes, skin, lungs, nose, throat and asthma conditions may become irritated with exposure.

    Dr. Earth

    • Dr. Earth All-Purpose Fertilizer has an NPK label of 4-4-4 in addition to soil microbes that break down organic material to make other nutrients available to plants. Nutrients are derived from fish bone meal, feather meal, alfalfa meal, mined potassium sulfate, soft rock phosphate and seaweed extract. A special fungus extract provides additional enzymes to help digest organic materials in the soil and release nutrients. Nonsynthetic chemical fertilizers enhance soil biology by increasing microorganism activity.

    Jobe's

    • Jobe's makes fertilizer spikes for flowers, vegetables, hanging baskets, tomatoes and trees, each with the NPK balance most suited to the plant type. The Bulb & Perennial Spikes are a 9-12-16 balance of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The company also makes organic pellet fertilizers and spikes that are approved by the Organic Materials Review Institute. The in-the-ground feeding provided by fertilizer spikes help build a beneficial microbial action where plants need it most, at the roots.

    Neptune's Harvest

    • Neptune's Harvest Hydrolized Fish Fertilizer has an NPK ratio of 2-4-1. It is an organic fertilizer made from North Atlantic fish in a cold process that protects vitamins, enzymes, amino acids and growth hormones. Fish fertilizer is in a thick liquid form that you must dilute for use with foliar sprayers, drip irrigation systems or watering cans. Neptune's Harvest is made from several species of fresh fish parts that are caught, processed and packaged on the same day. There is no odor.
