Lattice-top Wood Fence Styles

Lattice-top fence styles can provide an extra level of privacy without blocking out the sun entirely. Most lattice-top fences have a horizontal strip of lattice on top of the fence. Though most of these fences appear the same, you can create slight variations to ensure that the fence fits with the decor of your home and garden, such as modern or colonial.
  1. Builders Lattice-top Fence

    • Builders fences, which are simple and have little decoration, are perhaps the most common type for lattice tops. They have a smooth, horizontal top that does not have any posts protruding from it. This allows installers to place the lattice directly on top of the fence. The slats on builders fences go into the ground or they rest on it. This sets it apart from other fence styles that have a gap between the ground and the bottom of the fence.

    Modern Lattice-top Fence

    • Modern fences reflect modern architecture's emphasis on smooth, straight lines versus soft curves, and they generally avoid "busy" designs, such as lattice. In keeping with this, modern lattice-top fences have a crisscross pattern of horizontal and vertical slats rather than diagonal ones.

Modern fences have posts that protrude from the horizontal fence top, so a long, thin gap shows between the top of the fence and the bottom of the lattice. For some homeowners, this adds interest to the fence, but it also removes some of the privacy of other lattice-top fences.

    Starburst Lattice-top Fence

    • Starburst fences may be more abundant in sunny, coastal towns because of their depiction of the setting sun. The fence slats radiate at diagonal angles from a central sphere. This structure decorates the yard more than it provides privacy. The top of the fence has a smooth surface that allows you to place the lattice directly atop the fence.
