Traditionally, borders include material such as rocks, bricks, bark, mulch or other natural material. Using rock and brick borders around lawn turf can help avoid using a weed eater after mowing. These materials also add a second dimension to landscaping.
Borders can also include the use of hedges, shrubs or trees. You will need to be careful when using these borders around flowers and grass, though, as plants and shrubs will compete for water and nutrients.
Prior to laying out borders in your landscape, you should put together a design or plan for your yard. This helps define natural separation points in your lawn that you can use when placing borders within your landscape.
