Cost-Effective Ways to Kill Weeds & Grass

Homeowners wishing to remove weeds and grasses tend to have one of two things in mind: removing certain invasive weeds and grasses or removing all weeds and grasses. Several cost-effective methods can accomplish both these goals.
  1. Weed and Grass Problems

    • Unwanted weeds and grasses steal nutrients, sunlight and water from wanted plants and grasses. Moreover, if you do not remove weeds and grasses before installing a hard surface, such as a gravel driveway or patio pavers, the weeds and grasses can sprout up through the cracks and crevices.

    Chemical Options

    • Chemical herbicides, such as those containing glyphosate, are a relatively low-cost option to kill weeds and grasses. Nonselective herbicides will kill all weeds and grasses, whereas selective herbicides will only kill specific weeds and grasses.

    Natural Options

    • Natural options to kill weeds and grasses include rototilling and pulling by hand. A rototiller is a machine that features rotating blades. The machine turns over soil, destroying the roots of weeds and grasses in the process. Pulling the weeds and grasses by hand is an effective option if you are working with a relatively small area. Be sure to pull the entire root, and consider moistening the ground to loosen up the soil.
