Ammonium sulfate is a commonly used fertilizer for lawns. It provides the grass with much-needed nitrogen to help it grow well. Nitrogen is one of the fertilizers that lawns and other plants need. The fertilizer number for ammonium sulfate is 21-0-0. This means it is 21 percent nitrogen with 0 percent phosphorus and potassium. Apply ammonium sulfate only when there is a need for nitrogen-only fertilization.

Mix about 6 ½ lbs. of ammonium sulfate per 1,000 square feet of lawn with an equal amount of compost.

Sprinkle the mixture over the lawn. Rake over the lawn to work it into the soil under the turf.

Water the lawn well for 10 to 15 minutes following the application of ammonium sulfate to avoid burning the lawn.
