Does Pulling Weeds Kill the Root?

Weeds kill desirable plants and grasses by hogging nutrients, water and sunlight. In order to get rid of weeds and prevent them from returning in the future, you will need to remove the root of the weed.
  1. Unwanted Plants

    • Many people believe that there are certain plants that are always considered weeds. In fact, a weed is simply a plant that is unwanted. Consequently, a beautiful red rose sprouting up through your gravel driveway is a weed.

    Pulling Weeds

    • In order to kill the root of a weed, you need to dig up the root. To do this, moisten the soil around the weed (this loosens the soil). Then, use your hands or a hand-held hoe to dig down to the root of the weed and pull the root from the ground.

    Considerations

    • Herbicides, which contain toxic chemicals, are designed to kill weeds. A more natural approach involves fertilizing the area around the weeds. Fertilizer will encourage plant and grass growth, thus crowding out weeds. Fertilize during the peak growing season for your particular grass or plants. Fertilizing during dormant times can actually stimulate weed growth.
