How to Re-Grow Dead Sod

Sod will sometimes go brown and/or die. Insects, disease, poor soil conditions or drought are a few common reasons. Sod may also go dormant in the winter months, which results in the grass turning brown and looking dead. While dormant sod will usually grow back once weather is favorable, dead sod often needs help to grow back; but you may need to simply replace it.

Instructions

    • 1

Rake excess thatch from the dead sod. For spots less than 2 feet in area, the sod should grow back if soil conditions are favorable and no disease is present.

    • 2

Aerate the lawn for dead spots over 2 feet in area. Overseed the lawn with a seed similar to the sod currently in your lawn. Water in the seed, about 1 inch per week, to ensure that the grass grows in properly.

    • 3

Pull up on dead sod to ensure that roots have taken hold in the soil. Poor sod to soil contact will lead to dead patches in your lawn. Place a new sod piece in the spot to regrow the grass.
