Sketching out the lawn area helps you understand how to measure your lawn. Most sod farms sell sod pieces in rectangles averaging 2x3 feet. The problem with this is that your lawn may have triangle or circle shapes for which you need to plan. To properly estimate sod, break your lawn into squares or rectangles when sketching.
A measuring tape is necessary to determine the entire area where you will lay sod. While a standard tape measure works well for smaller lawns, a rolling tape measure works better for larger lawn areas. The rolling tape measure has a wheel at the end of a long shaft. As you roll the length and width of your lawn, a counter notes the distance.
To help you determine the final number for ordering sod you'll need a basic calculator. To first calculate the area, multiply the length times the width for each triangle area you measured. Divide each of these numbers by nine to determine the square yards for each area. Round up to the nearest whole number, and add together all the numbers. Add 10 percent to the total so you have some extra.
