Selecting which type of grass and where to purchase the artificial turf is often one of the most challenging parts of switching to a synthetic grass lawn or field. Local contractors, such as SprinTurf Synthetic Turf Systems and Pennsylvania Synthetic Grass, offer a variety of turf for small projects, such as front or backyards, and larger ones, such as playing fields and golf greens. Although the selection of grass types can be limited, local contractors will also install the lawn. For a wider selection and for rural areas where contractors are not available, national companies produce and ship several types of artificial grass nationwide. These grasses are made from materials such as nylon or polyethylene and come in a range of grass styles, from the short centipede suitable for putting greens to longer fescue or St. Augustine and rye.
While Pennsylvania has a number of landscapes, no special instructions are required for installing a synthetic turf there. Start by clearing the surface area and grading it down until it is completely flat. Apply a layer of fine crushed gravel. This layer should be 3 inches or more and will allow water to drain through the synthetic grass system into the ground. Tamp the gravel down with a plate tamper until it is flattened and cohesive. Apply the carpet of synthetic grass, holding it down with galvanized landscape spikes. Different companies and products use different methods of permanently bonding the artificial turf to the surface; some use glue while others prefer a proprietary bonding system.
Most artificial grass systems are built to last 10 years or more, but maximum lifespan can only be obtained with the proper maintenance. Pennsylvania is known for its foliage, but raking leaves and debris out of the artificial lawn regularly is important since decaying organic matter can lead to mildew or fungus growth. Additionally, after a heavy storm or snowfall, ensure that proper drainage of water occurs on all parts of the lawn. Stagnant pools are unsightly and can also be a source of mildew.
