There are two types of fescue: fine fescue and tall fescue with numerous subcategories under each. For example, red fescue is a type of fine fescue, which is usually soft and smooth.
Fine fescue are some of the finest turfgrasses available, according to North Carolina State University. Tall fescue is very tolerant to drought and will live in places too hot for cool-season grass and too cold for warm-season grasses.
Fescue grass blades have sharp points on their ends with distinctive ridges on the inner part of the blade, as well. Depending on the variety, fescue grass has round or flat sheaths.
