How to use a River or Stream to Pump Spring Water

The invention of pumps allowed people to transport water from rivers and streams to communities that did not have water sources in their area. Without a stream or river, a community would have to depend on rain water. According to Environment, Health and Safety Online, scientists in January 2011 have reported a lack of sanitation in water transported from certain springs in the United States and used for public water supply. Pumping your own spring water can ensure its sanitation. Drawing your own spring water can be quite economical, since it will cut down on your water bill.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a spring close to your home. These are often located in or near forests and mountains and outside freshwater lakes. Find a spring that is no further than an hour's drive from your home, or your water may become stale and warm during your trip back home.

    • 2

Put the top end of the hand pump inside the spring.

    • 3

Push down on the pump to force all the air out, and extract water into the dispensing tube.

    • 4

Push down the pump five times to flush out debris that may have gathered inside the pump.

    • 5

Take a glass jar and place it on the ground next to the spring. Feed the dispensing tube into the jar's opening.

    • 6

Press down on the hand pump to fill the jar. Allow the water to rise to an inch from the top.

    • 7

Screw the cap on the jar tightly. Put it aside. Repeat this process until all your jars are filled.

    • 8

Wrap each jar in a blanket or towel so they will not break on your journey home. Place them all inside a large box and put them in your car.

    • 9

At home, keep the jars in a dark place such as your basement at a cool temperature. Keep them wrapped to prevent damage and increase shelf life. The water will stay fresh as long as you keep it out of direct sunlight.
