Can I Put Weed Killer on a Brand New Lawn?

Weeds can quickly destroy the benefits of a brand new lawn. In addition to looking unsightly, weeds steal nutrients, water and oxygen from desirable grasses and plants. This leaves your brand new lawn looking unhealthy.
  1. Weed Killer

    • Weed killers, known as herbicides, can be used on a brand new lawn. Use a selective herbicide to avoid damaging the lawn. Selective herbicides target specific weeds, leaving desirable grass alone.

    Examples

    • 2,4-D is a selective herbicide that kills only broad-leaf plants, not grasses. Pendimethalin is an herbicide that controls crabgrass as it germinates but does not injure established turfgrass.

    Tips

    • Water the lawn lightly to keep the root zone moist without saturating the soil. This helps prevent weed growth in new lawns. Do not mow the lawn until the roots are firmly planted in the soil. Mowing too early tears new grass from the lawn, leaving room for weeds to grow.
