How to Get Rid of Lawn Moles in Bainbridge Island, Washington

Lawn moles are commonly found in Western Washington, including Bainbridge Island. In North America, most moles are insectivorous. However, Washington species eat both plants and animals. Consequently, the mole in your lawn may have been drawn there by the insects or by your garden. In addition to eating your plants, moles can dig up your lawn, leaving visible tunnels and unsightly molehills. By building a homemade trap to get rid of the moles, your yard can return to its former glory.

Instructions

    • 1

      Locate the molehill.

    • 2

Lower a stick into the ground around the molehill. Once you hit a spot where the earth gives way, the stick will suddenly drop a couple of inches--and you will have found an active tunnel.

    • 3

Dig a hole into the floor of the tunnel and place a wide-mouth quart glass jar or 3-lb. coffee can into the tunnel so that the top of the can is level with the bottom of the tunnel. The idea is that the mole will run through the tunnel and fall into the jar.

    • 4

Cover the tunnel with a board or some other material so that no light enters the tunnel.

    • 5

Check the trap twice per day. When you catch the mole, release it several miles from your home. Moles are solitary animals that live in established burrow systems that generally do not overlap with other moles' territories. Thus, this should put an end to your mole problem.

    • 6

Level all existing molehills so that new molehills can be detected.

    • 7

Build a barrier around your property. The barrier should extend at least 2 feet beneath the earth's surface. This will help prevent moles from returning.
