Lawn Sprinkler & Water Pressure

The proper operation of your lawn irrigation system depends upon the water pressure that it receives. The proper pressure level is crucial to correctly operate sprinkler heads and supply the right amount of water to your lawn.
  1. Recommended Pressure

    • Most sprinkler systems require a water pressure of 40 to 60 pounds per square inch, or psi. Water pressure that is greater than this level can rupture the tubing or damage the sprinkler fixtures. If the water pressure is below this level, there may not be sufficient water flow to operate the pop-up or rotating sprinkler heads.

    Testing Your Pressure

    • Test the static water pressure using a water gauge that attaches to one of your outdoor spigots. Screw the gauge on the bib just as you would a hose, turn on the water as high as it will allow and record your water pressure. Perform this same test while water is running to appliances and fixtures in your house and average the two readings.

    Water Pressure Problems

    • Higher than normal water pressure can be corrected with a pressure limiting valve installed ahead of the sprinkler manifold in the system's plumbing. If your water pressure trends toward lower pressures, choose sprinkler fixtures that utilize stationary heads and smaller circuits to make the best use of the available water flow.
