New Sod Treatment

Sod is an alternative to planting grass seed and waiting for one to two months to see green grass. Sod is green grass that comes ready to lie on top of the prepared soil.
  1. Water

    • New sod needs to be watered on a daily basis for up to two weeks providing 1/2 inch water in the morning and 1/2 inch of water in the evening. For the next two months, the sod needs to be watered at least twice a week with 1 inch of water each time.

    Mowing

    • New sod is not mowed until the second or third week after planting and only when the sod is rooted into the soil below. Generally, the grass blades will be 4 or 5 inches long before cutting off the top 1/2 inch of the grass blade.

    Chemicals

    • New sod is not fertilized until two months after planting. If the sod is planted in the fall, fertilizer is not used until the following spring. Weed killers are not used on sod until after the second growing season.
