How to Grow Grass in a Sandy Area

Grass does not naturally grow in sand because sand lacks the necessary nutrients needed for grass to thrive. If you want to plant grass in sand and you expect it to thrive, you must transplant these nutrients to the sand. With the proper substrate additives, you will have a foundation capable of supporting grass seed and you will grow a lush yard.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix fresh topsoil and organic compost into a wheelbarrow with a 1 to 1 ratio. Mix the topsoil and organic compost with a garden hoe or spade.

    • 2

Spread the mixture over the sandy ground where you plan to grow grass. Create a layer 2 inches thick with a rake.

    • 3

Spread grass fertilizer over the topsoil and organic compost mixture. Use 5 pounds of fertilizer for every 1,000 square feet of ground you are planting.

    • 4

Mix the topsoil, compost and fertilizer with the sandy ground by tilling it with a motorized tiller or turning the ground with a hoe. A motorized tiller makes quick work of the task and provides the best mixture.

    • 5

Rake the ground surface flat. Follow the contour of the ground to promote proper water runoff.

    • 6

Spread the grass seed with a walk-behind seed spreader. Refer to the grass seed packaging to determine the correct amount of seed to plant in your area. This will differ depending on region, type of seed used and manufacturer.
