How Can I Combine Two Zones of a Sprinkler System?

Irrigation setups need to change as gardens and lawns evolve. Old sprinkler zones become irrelevant or ineffective as plants are added or removed. Well-established areas don't require as much water as newly installed lawns, and as the watering needs of zones decrease, combining two zones can open up a watering station. The easiest way to combine two zones is to join them together at the irrigation controller.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the face of your irrigation controller to expose where the low-voltage wires are connected. Locate the wires that control the zones you wish to combine.

    • 2

Loosen the terminal screws for each wire. Remove the low-voltage wires and replace them underneath the terminal screw that corresponds to the watering station that will control the newly combined watering zones.

    • 3

Tighten the terminal screw so that both wires are now terminated at the correct zone. Using your irrigation controller's manual setting, check to be sure that both zones now function at the same time.

Reprogram the system. The old zone should be turned off and the watering times at the combined station may need to be adjusted.
