As of 2011, artificial grass retails for $3 to $10 per square foot, depending on where you buy it, the manufacturer and its primary use. Artificial playground grasses and grasses used for sports, such as putting greens, are often less expensive than grass used for landscaping purposes. Infill grass is more expensive, as it has a rubber padding placed between the lawn and it, unlike no-infill grass, which is applied directly on top of the lawn.
Companies charge a set fee based on the total square footage of your lawn, regardless of whether all spaces are covered by the fake grass. For example, you may have a well, stone decorations or other items that the grass won't sit under. This is sometimes referred to as a spare turf fee because you pay for fake grass to cover the entire lawn, even though you'll have turf left over.
Keep in mind that the per-yard cost of the grass doesn't include delivery fees. While some companies base the delivery fee on the total amount of fake grass ordered, others charge a set fee no matter how much you order.
