Ideal Temperature for Fescue Germination

Fescue, a cool-season grass, forms the turf for many golf courses, playgrounds and athletic fields. Originally a pasture grass, it remains a popular choice for use as animal fodder. Landscapers and homeowners often choose fescue for lawns.
  1. Temperature Range

    • A soil temperature range of 50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit, with air temperature of 60 to 75 degrees, is ideal for germination of fescue.

    Fall Planting

    • Planting fescue in early fall in most climates gives it time to become established before winter. It then has another growing season in spring before summer heat forces it into dormancy. The optimum time for planting depends on when winter weather normally arrives in your area.

    Not in Summer

    • If night temperatures remain above 70 degrees Fahrenheit, fescue should not be planted. Newly grown grass that goes immediately into heat dormancy will not have enough time afterward to become established before winter. This will kill the fescue.
