Ryegrass Growing Methods

Either a cool season perennial or annual, ryegrass (Lolium spp.) flourishes when grown as a pasture, turf or lawn. Grown from seed, ryegrass is directly sown on to the soil's surface or overseeded onto warm-season grass varieties to produce winter color.
  1. Annual Ryegrass Planting Time Frame

    • Annual ryegrass grows well when planted in the late summer and early fall, generally during August and September, but it will also grow if planted into mid-October. Overseed into existing lawns. Germination occurs in 7 to 10 days.

    Perennial Ryegrass Considerations

    • Perennial ryegrass seed grows best when seeded in the spring months but also grows if planted in the fall months. When growing perennial ryegrass for pasture, consider mixing with legumes to produce a higher-quality animal forage.

    Planting Requirements

    • Plant ryegrass seed into a prepared, no-tilled seed bed or spread the seeds over an existing lawn. Use 8 to 10 lbs. per 1,000 square feet of ryegrass seed to establish a full lawn. Keep the grass seed moist to encourage germination. Ryegrass requires moist soil conditions to thrive and does not withstand drought well. The grass grows best in cool-season regions.
