What Works Best to Kill Moss Growing in a Lawn?

Moss, similar to weeds, frustrates property owners by discoloring lawns and stealing nutrients from desirable plants and grasses. Fortunately, there are ways to kill moss growing in lawns.
  1. Causes

    • Moss invades lawns where grasses are not thriving. Shade, poor drainage and thin grass all contribute to moss growth. Moreover, lawns that are not frequently mowed stand a greater chance of being invaded by moss.

    Solutions

    • There are several products available at most home and garden stores that will kill moss growing in your lawn. Products that include ferrous sulfate and ferrous ammonium sulfate will help control moss, as will the more natural solution of lemon-scented dishsoap in water. Improving underlying drainage and light conditions are necessary to keep moss from returning.

    Lime and Moss

    • Contrary to popular belief, lime does not kill moss. What lime can do is help grasses grow better. This, in turn, leaves less sunlight, water, and nutrients for moss, making it less likely to invade. Washington State University Extension Service recommends that you use 100 lbs. of lime per 1,000 square feet for lawns that are not yet established, and 35 lbs. of lime per 1,000 square feet for lawns that are established.
