Salt on Fruit Trees

Salt affects fruit trees in a number of ways, but none are very positive. Salt can kill any type of living plant, including trees, and damage any surrounding vegetation.
  1. Signs

    • Check the tips of the fruit tree leaves, looking for a dark brown, red or reddish-brown color. You may also notice the color in the center of the leaves. Salt may also cause younger branches and twigs on the fruit tree to slowly die.

    Prevention

    • When you see any signs of salt damage, spray an even coating of cold water over the trees. Spray the fruit trees at least once a day, as long as the problem persists. Read the ingredient list on any fertilizer used on your lawn or in your garden and avoid those with salt.

    Considerations

    • Salt affects some fruit trees more seriously than others. The University of Massachusetts lists the hackberry and black walnut as two trees most damaged by salt.
