Check the tips of the fruit tree leaves, looking for a dark brown, red or reddish-brown color. You may also notice the color in the center of the leaves. Salt may also cause younger branches and twigs on the fruit tree to slowly die.
When you see any signs of salt damage, spray an even coating of cold water over the trees. Spray the fruit trees at least once a day, as long as the problem persists. Read the ingredient list on any fertilizer used on your lawn or in your garden and avoid those with salt.
Salt affects some fruit trees more seriously than others. The University of Massachusetts lists the hackberry and black walnut as two trees most damaged by salt.
