How do I Make a Strong Vacuum for Water?

The problem with most vacuum cleaners is they can't suck in water because the water will get into the motor and burn it out. Heavy-duty wet vacs can soak up the water, but can be expensive. The alternative is to create your own homemade wet vac that has the strength to soak up water quickly and won't break the bank. The key is to have a vacuum that has a motor that rests above the tank so it does not come into contact with the water.

  • Vacuum hose
  • Measuring tape

Instructions

Open the bucket. Cut a hole near the bottom with the utility knife, which will act as a drain. Place the cork in the hole, so that it makes an air-tight seal. Fill the bucket with water to make sure it doesn't leak. Remove water.

Measure the width of the hose. Cut a hole into the bucket near the top slightly larger than the hose using the utility knife. Place the hose in the hole. Fill the spaces around the hole with silicon sealant. Wait for the sealant to dry. Fill the bucket with water to make sure the sealant is air tight and there are no leaks. Remove water.

Place the lid on the bucket. Measure the width of the PVC pipe using the measuring tape. Cut a hole in the center of the lid just large enough for the pipe to fit securely. Remove the lid. Place the pipe into the hole, so that it is about six inches into bucket. Cut the pipe, so it almost flush with the top of the bucket using pipe cutters. Wrap the wire mesh at the bottom of the pipe. Secure mesh tightly with a rubber band. Place sealant around the edge of the hole and pipe to make it air tight. Place the lid back on the bucket.

Set the vacuum motor on top of the bucket, so the intake is directly over the pipe. Cut a small hole in the motor hood to allow for the cord. Place the hood on top of the motor. Glue the hood over the motor and allow for the glue to dry. Cut holes into the top of the hood using the utility knife for a vent.

Plug in the vacuum cleaner. The motor should begin sucking air into the bucket through the hose. Place your hand over the end of the hose to make sure air is being sucked into the bucket. Suck up a small puddle of water to make sure everything is working properly. Remove the lid and dump the bucket when the water level reaches about half way up the side of the bucket.
