Hang the bird feeder where squirrels cannot reach. The "Wild Birds Forever" website recommends putting the feeder 10 feet away from any surface squirrels travel on, such as poles or tree limbs. This distance prevents squirrels from running or leaping onto the bird feeder. Strong string or wiring is required to prevent the feeder from falling to the ground.
Rub petroleum jelly on the pole or limb that leads to the feeder, as well as on the outside of the feeder. The jelly causes squirrels to slip, preventing their access while not attracting other unwanted pests to the area. Do this on a daily basis to keep squirrels away from the bird food.
Add aluminum foil on the outside portions of the feeder. The crinkling noise made when squirrels stand on the foil scares the animals away. This won't impact birds, however, as they're too light to cause a significant sound while on the foil.
Use special food that is undesirable to squirrels. According to "Wild Birds Forever," safflower and hot pepper bird foods keep squirrels from returning to the feeder. Neither seed injures or detracts birds.
Attach a squirrel baffle or cage to the feeder, or buy a special "squirrel-proof" feeder. These prevent squirrels from accessing the food, while still allowing smaller birds to enter into the feeder. The method for attaching a baffle or cage varies per add-on that you purchase.
