How to Cover Grass Seed to Protect It From Birds

A grass lawn can sometimes become undernourished and can thin out in places. One solution to this uneven lawn is to seed the lawn with more grass seed. However, songbirds will often feast on your newly seeded lawn, preventing the new grass seeds from creating new grass shoots. You can protect the grass seeds from becoming eaten by birds by covering your lawn in a certain way that will make it difficult for the birds to find and eat the seeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle the grass seed over your lawn. You can either do this by hand or you can use a device that you can push that will disperse the seeds evenly as you walk.

    • 2

Pull out chunks of dried hay from a hay bale.

    • 3

Separate the hay in your hand to make it form an even sheet.

    • 4

Lay the sheet of hay over a section of the seeded lawn.

    • 5

Repeat this process until your entire lawn is covered in an even sheet of hay. The hay will deter the birds from finding and eating your grass seed.
