A Fertilizer Burn on Fescue

Fescue grass is a hardy lawn and turf grass, but it's susceptible to damage from misapplied chemicals. Using fertilizer correctly is key to having a healthy, problem-free garden or lawn.
  1. Fertilizer Burn

    • Fertilizer burn is caused by improper application of fertilizer or excess fertilizer. Too much fertilizer leaves harmful chemicals and salt on the grass blades, which dehydrates them and causes them to turn brown and die.

    Cutting the Grass

    • Keeping the fescue grass cut short after fertilizer burn is noticeable helps prevent the grass from being damaged further. Mowing the lawn with an attachment helps catch any excess fertilizer that remains on the ground.

    Water

    • Watering fescue grass frequently helps dissipate the fertilizer and restore the grass to health. Allow the water to drain after each session to prevent the grass from drowning or becoming damaged from excess moisture.
