Lawn Fertilizer Safety

Applying fertilizer to your lawn is a way to keep your grass looking green and healthy. However, when using fertilizer you must take precaution to protect yourself and your family from potential injury.
  1. Identification

    • Most lawn fertilizers are made of chemicals that can be harmful to humans. Whenever working with fertilizer wear safety gloves and long sleeves and pants to prevent contact with the skin. Since fertilizers are high in nitrogen, they can burn you if you touch them.

    Precautions

    • For best result, store your fertilizer in cool and dry place when you're not using them. Keep them out of reach of your children and pets as well. On the day you apply the fertilizer, keep your kids and animals off the yard.

    Considerations

    • Read all instructions that come with the fertilizer before you apply it. If you are exposed to the lawn fertilizer wash it off immediately. Continue to rinse the exposed area for 15 minutes after exposure. Once the area is clean, contact your doctor for immediate assistance.
