Sprinkler Head Covering Types

Choosing the right type of sprinkler head is an essential step toward maintaining a healthy and beautiful lawn. Sprinklers come in a wide variety of types, including pop-up models that hide from view when not in use, to gear-driven models that cover large areas of landscaping. Sprinkler systems can be easily modified by changing out individual sprinkler heads to meet your lawn's specific needs.
  1. Pop-Up Sprinklers

    • Pop-up sprinklers are installed underground. They remain hidden from view when not in use. When the zone is activated, water pressure forces the head above the surface, and sprays water in an even, predetermined pattern that can range from 90 degrees to 360 degrees. Pop-up sprinklers are among the most economical options for sprinkler systems.

    Gear-Driven and Impact Sprinklers

    • For especially large areas, gear-driven and impact sprinklers are an excellent option. These sprinklers use water pressure to drive a set of gears or paddles that physically move the stream of water from the sprinkler head in a predetermined pattern. These types of sprinklers are usually more expensive than pop-up sprinklers, because they contain complex inner gears. The advantage of using a gear-driven or impact sprinkler is that they cover large areas of landscaping evenly. There are also low-flow options, which use fewer gallons per minute while still providing even coverage.

    Fixed Sprinklers

    • Fixed sprinkler heads are usually installed above ground, and are ideal for irrigating shrubs and other tall plants. Unlike gear-driven sprinkler heads, fixed sprinklers do not move. They do provide precise watering, as they can be aimed directly where water is needed. Fixed sprinkler heads can also be mounted on plastic risers of any size, to help water hard-to-reach areas. Fixed sprinklers are an economical option.

    Portable Surface Sprinklers

    • Not everyone has a built-in sprinkler system. In that case, having a portable surface sprinkler is an easy way to water lawns without having to install an entire irrigation system. Most portable sprinklers connect to standard garden hoses, and can be manually set for spray distance and patterns. Portable sprinklers are easily moved, and can be connected to multiple heads for even water coverage. Portable hose sprinklers come in round and square patterns. Pick the pattern that best fits your lawn to help minimize water waste.
