Growing Early Grass

Cool-season grasses germinate earlier and at cooler temperatures, hence their designation as "early grass." These seeds are great for use over an existing lawn. Planting cool-season grasses is best when the days are warm and the nights cooler, so they grow most rapidly in the late spring and early summer. Early grasses can even be planted over snow to allow the spring melt to carry the seeds down into the existing lawn bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the lawn and remove dead vegetation, debris and leaves to provide the early grass seed with more contact with the soil.

    • 2

Add fill dirt to uneven areas of the lawn. Keep fill dirt composition as close to the soil of your lawn as possible to promote even growth.

    • 3

Break up clumped and packed soil with a tiller. This helps the grass's root system to penetrate the soil more easily.

    • 4

Mist the lawn with water to moisten and prepare the soil. Using a seed spreader or by hand, distribute the early grass seed evenly over the lawn. Once seed has been spread, cover loosely with compost to protect the seed and tamp down with a lawn roller.

    • 5

Continue watering the lawn, keeping moist but not saturated soil conditions to enhance the growth of your early grass.
